What is happening at the Rio Negro jineteada championship this weekend?

The Rio Negro jineteada championship (Campeonato Rionegrino de Jineteadas) lands in Sierra Grande from Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25, 2026, with rounds 5 and 6 of its 12-round season. It's the first time the town near the coast of southeastern Río Negro, Argentina, has hosted the provincial circuit, which picks the riders who will represent the province at the Festival Nacional de Doma y Folklore de Jesús María in January 2027.

The provincial government announced the program on October 22. Local press had already billed the weekend as a full fiesta, with jineteada, live music and a raffle for a new car.

Sierra Grande jineteada 2026: the weekend program

This is the schedule published by the Río Negro Government:

  • Friday 23, 18:00: grounds open, followed by a desafío de tropilleros (tropilleros challenge) with two horses per tropilla. The night closes with a baile campero (country dance) and a chamamé show.
  • Saturday 24, from 9:00: carrera de tambores (barrel racing), then an official ceremony and an almuerzo criollo (traditional lunch) at midday, and a folk ballet in the afternoon.
  • Saturday 24, 19:00: round 5 of the championship in Gurupa, Crina Limpia and Bastos, then another dance.
  • Sunday 25, from 8:00: grounds open for round 6, with another criollo lunch and dance.

Where the sources differ

Other listings don't match the official schedule on every detail, so take these with caution:

  • NoticiasNet describes Friday's jineteada as "special rides" with 10 million pesos in prizes and puts Saturday's riding at 18:00. The government's schedule says 19:00.
  • Both NoticiasNet (quoting Sierra Grande's tourism office) and an events listing mention a bingo on Sunday with a new (0 km) car as the prize, at 50,000 pesos per card.
  • The events listing also mentions a Saturday rueda of 30 horses ridden con el cuero tendido (on a laid sheepskin), open to riders.

If you're traveling, confirm start times with the organizers on the day. Rural events often run late, and the ride order depends on how many horses and riders are entered.

Jineteada categories: Bastos, Crina Limpia and Gurupa surera

All three categories are rides on a reservado, a horse kept for bucking events, tied to a post (palenque) until the rider is set. The main difference is what sits between the rider and the horse.

CategoryWhat the rider sits onWhat makes it hard
Bastos con encimeraA basto rig with stirrups, not the full working recadoThe rider must keep both stirrups
Crina LimpiaNothing: the horse's bare backGrip comes only from a strap around the neck and the rider's legs
Gurupa sureraA sheepskin pad cinched to the horseReins in one hand, a rebenque (short whip) in the other, little to hold

Some details to know:

  • Bastos con encimera isn't the same as recado completo, a category some jineteadas run separately in which the rider uses the full working recado. Río Negro's circuit doesn't include it.
  • Crina Limpia is also written Clina Limpia. Both spellings show up in official Río Negro releases.
  • Gurupa surera (sometimes sureña) takes its name from the southern (sureño) style of riding on a sheepskin pad.
  • Each category has a fixed ride time of a few seconds, set by the regulations and ended by a bell. We couldn't find the current official Jesús María rulebook online, so we aren't printing exact times.

Riders earn points for each ride, and the Río Negro Government reports on the championship after each double round.

How the 12-date circuit works and the road to Jesús María

The 2026 season started in August with 85 riders entered across the three categories. Each host stages two rounds over one weekend:

RoundsHostDates (2026)
1-2Barda del MedioSept 11-13
3-4Coronel BelisleSept 18-20
5-6Sierra GrandeOct 23-25
7-8El BolsónNov 13-15
9-10MaquinchaoNov 20-22
11-12Cervantes (final)Dec 11-13

Sierra Grande and Maquinchao are both hosting for the first time this year.

Riders build up points in their category across every round. The top riders when the season ends make up the Río Negro delegation for the Festival Nacional de Doma y Folklore de Jesús María in Córdoba in January 2027. That festival is Argentina's best-known jineteada stage, so these are real Jesús María qualifiers.

At last season's final in Cervantes in December 2025, the province named one champion per category plus two alternates for the team. The official release didn't say how many places a category can earn, so we won't guess at the 2027 numbers.

Tropilleros and apadrinadores: the horsemen around the ride

The rider is the star, but two other roles are just as important.

Tropilleros

A tropilla is a group of horses that travel and work together, traditionally following a lead mare. A tropillero owns or manages that group and brings horses to the event.

In the Friday desafío de tropilleros, each tropilla brings two horses, ridden in bastos con encimera, and the riders can vary from one tropillero to another. The test is as much about the tropillero's horses as about the riders.

Apadrinadores (padrinos)

Apadrinadores, or padrinos, are mounted horsemen who ride close to every ride. The event listing for Sierra Grande names three. Their job comes down to timing:

  • Stay near the ride without getting in the horse's way.
  • At the bell, move in quickly so the rider can get off safely onto the padrino's horse.
  • Take control of the loose horse and lead it out of the ring calmly.

One experienced San Juan padrino told local press that the role has no exam or theory: it's learned through practice, and it depends on a good horse and split-second reactions. A good padrino team protects both the rider and the horse.

Horse welfare and the debate around jineteada

Jineteadas get real welfare scrutiny in Argentina. Animal-protection groups campaign against them, and festivals have answered with rule changes.

  • Jesús María reported in late 2023 that it was dropping Crina Limpia from its "Jinetes por la Patria" championship and adding a cuero (sheepskin) category. It said the change was made to protect the animal.
  • The same announcement said helmets would be recommended but optional, because no approved standard existed yet for this kind of riding.
  • In January 2020, the Córdoba animal-protection group Sin Estribo filed a criminal complaint against the Jesús María organizers alleging animal mistreatment and asked for the festival to be canceled.

If you go, here is what good practice looks like: calm handling at the palenque, padrinos ready on fit horses, riders stopping their spurs at the bell, and water and shade for the horses between rides. To learn the general signs of a stressed horse, see our behavior guide.

What to watch next

  • This weekend: rounds 5 and 6 at Sierra Grande. Watch for who extends a lead in each category and who closes the gap.
  • After Sunday: watch the Río Negro Government's news page for an update on the standings. We'll only report results once they're official.
  • November: back-to-back weekends in El Bolsón (Nov 13-15) and Maquinchao (Nov 20-22).
  • December 11-13: the final in Cervantes decides the Jesús María delegation.
  • January 2027: Jesús María, where Río Negro's riders face the best from across Argentina.

Going in person: a quick checklist

  • Bring layers. Spring nights on the Patagonian coast get cold and windy.
  • Bring cash for food stalls, raffles and local transport.
  • Keep kids behind the fence line and away from the palenque and the horse lines. Our safety guide covers the basics around horses.
  • Don't fly drones over the ring. Ask organizers before taking photos near the horses.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Sierra Grande jineteada in 2026?

From Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25, 2026. The official program has round 5 on Saturday at 19:00 and round 6 on Sunday, with the grounds opening at 8:00.

What are the jineteada categories?

The Río Negro championship uses three: Bastos con encimera (a basto rig with stirrups the rider must not lose), Crina Limpia (bareback, holding a neck strap) and Gurupa surera (a cinched sheepskin pad, with reins in one hand and a whip in the other).

How do riders qualify for Jesús María from Río Negro?

They build up points in their category across the 12 rounds of the provincial championship. The top riders after the December final in Cervantes form Río Negro's delegation at the Festival Nacional de Doma y Folklore de Jesús María in January 2027.

What is a desafío de tropilleros?

It's a challenge between tropilleros, the people who manage a tropilla, or group of horses. At Sierra Grande, each tropilla brings two horses, ridden in bastos con encimera by different riders.

What do apadrinadores do in a jineteada?

They are mounted horsemen who stay close to every ride. When the bell rings, they come in so the rider can get off safely, then take control of the horse and lead it out calmly. It's a key job for the safety of both rider and horse.

Where are the remaining 2026 rounds?

After Sierra Grande, the circuit goes to El Bolsón (Nov 13-15) and Maquinchao (Nov 20-22), then ends with the final in Cervantes (Dec 11-13).
