Cabalcor'26: the PRE horse morphology show opening today in Córdoba

A PRE horse morphology show is a competition where specialist judges score how a Pura Raza Española horse is built (its conformation) and how it moves, measured against the breed ideal. One of the biggest on the calendar opens today, Thursday, Sept. 24: the XXXI Concurso Morfológico 'Ciudad de Córdoba', held at the Caballerizas Reales de Córdoba (the Royal Stables) through Saturday, Sept. 26.

COPE Córdoba reports 45 studs (ganaderías) and 88 horses across 81 entries, with morning and afternoon sessions. Along with horses from all over Spain, breeders from Mexico, the USA, Honduras and Panama are taking part.

The show is part of Cabalcor 2026, the equestrian program that Córdoba Ecuestre runs at the Royal Stables through Oct. 14. Organizers call it one of the main lead-ins to SICAB 2026, the International Horse Show in Seville, Nov. 17-22.

Who's judging and who's showing

• Morphology judges: Álvaro Cabrera (Córdoba) and Juan Manuel Carnero (Málaga), according to COPE.
• Functionality judge: Juan Heredia.
• SICAB award-winning studs in the entry list, per the Córdoba press: María Fernanda de la Escalera, Best Breeder at SICAB 2025, and Yeguada Zavi ESP, Best Exhibitor, plus Yeguada Torreluna, Yeguada Batán and Yeguada de Trujillo.

How a morphology show works, step by step

The idea is simple. The winner isn't the horse the crowd likes best. It's the one closest to the breed standard, and each horse competes only against horses of the same age and sex.

Sections by age and sex

The classic PRE show structure splits horses like this (age counts from Jan. 1):

There are also mare group classes for mares 4 and older (groups of three or five) and best-breeder awards. Yearling sections can only be held at 1-star shows, the lowest category; at 2- and 3-star shows the youngest horses are 2. Each show publishes its own program, so the exact number of sections can vary.

What happens in the ring

1. Admission. A panel checks the horse's identity (its microchip), health papers, that it's the right age for its section, and that it has no obvious defects.
2. Standing. The handler, on foot with the horse in a show halter, sets it up square so judges can see it from the side, front and back.
3. Movement. In hand, the horse walks down the center of the ring, does at least three consecutive laps at the canter, then trots to the far end and back. ANCCE rules allow 2 minutes 15 seconds, and anything shown after time runs out isn't scored.
4. Scores. When there are several morphology judges, each fills out their own sheet and the final score is the average.

What judges score on a PRE horse

The PRE morphology judging manual, based on ANCCE's show rules and updated in 2026, scores each area on a 2-to-10 scale. Low marks reflect mild, serious or very serious faults. High marks go to what is most correct and most typical of the breed.

Conformation, part by part

• Head and neck: proportion, expression, and how the neck comes out of the withers. A PRE's neck should be arched and well set on.
• Back and loin (the topline): firm and short, not sagging or roached.
• Croup: rounded and in proportion with the rest of the body.
• Limbs: leg alignment (how the legs meet the ground), clean joints and sound-looking feet.
• Overall picture: balance between the parts, body condition, sexual dimorphism (stallions should look masculine and mares feminine) and presentation.

Movement

Judges look for regular rhythm, reach, elasticity, impulsion and straightness. Under ANCCE's rules, every section from the 2-year-olds up to the adults is scored at the walk, trot and canter, and each section's best-movement award goes to the horse with the highest total of those three marks.

Morphology vs. functionality: not the same test

Morphology judges how the horse is built and how it moves loose or in hand. Functionality is a separate test. The horse is ridden, and the judge looks at how it responds to the rider's aids, how soft the contact is, and its lightness, harmony and execution of the exercises.

Under ANCCE's rules, the functionality test counts for 25% of a stallion's total score. It's compulsory in the stallion sections for horses 4 and older, but only for the top-placed horses (the first 10, 12 or 15, depending on the size of the section) and the best mover. Mares can ride the test voluntarily, but that mark doesn't count toward their final score. So a beautiful stallion that isn't easy to ride loses points.

How a horse reaches SICAB

SICAB 2026 is the show's 36th edition. It hosts the XII PRE World Championship at FIBES in Seville, Nov. 17-22. Open entry doesn't get a horse into the morphology world championship. It has to qualify.

• Qualifying shows: ANCCE, the Spanish breeders' association, recognizes morphology shows in Spain and abroad, and Córdoba is one of them.
• Rankings: scores feed a ranking system with separate national and international standings.
• Official lists: before the championship, ANCCE publishes the rankings and qualified horses on its competition website.

That's why Mexican and Central American studs make the trip to Córdoba. A strong score at a prestigious Spanish show can move their horse closer to the final in Seville.

How to watch if you're visiting from abroad

Local press reports that entry to Cabalcor competitions is free until the venue is full. If you're already in Andalusia, it's a great chance to see top-level PRE horses up close.

Quick visitor checklist

• Arrive early: seating is limited, and the best spots fill first.
• Check the schedule: there are morning and afternoon sessions.
• Bring water and a hat: late September in Córdoba can still be hot.
• Respect the barns: the entries include stallions. Don't touch or feed any horse without permission.

• Before SICAB: ANCCE publishes the list of horses qualified for the world championship.
• Nov. 17-22: SICAB 2026 in Seville.
