On Oct. 24, 2026, Los Tamaulipecos scored 457 points at the Nacional Charro in San Luis Potosí, passing the 456 of Rancho Los Tres Potrillos and taking the provisional AAA lead. Fans are asking how a charreada score even gets that high.

TL;DR

  • Los Tamaulipecos of Reynosa scored 457 in AAA on Oct. 24, 2026 at Arena Potosí, one point past the previous record of 456 by Rancho Los Tres Potrillos of Jalisco. El Mañana notes the mark still awaits official ratification.
  • A team total is the sum of ten scored faenas: each charro earns a base score for what he executes, plus adicionales for style and time, minus infraction points.
  • The nine lazos (three piales, three manganas a pie, three manganas a caballo) are where big totals are made: Los Tamaulipecos landed all nine, with 77 points in each set of manganas.
  • For scale, El Soyate's 423 had led AAA since the Nacional's first weekend, and the Oct. 24 charreada also produced 355 and 283. The standings are provisional, and the escaramuzas are scored on a separate sheet.

How Is Charrería Scored? The 457-Point Record in Context

How is charreria scored? Every charro earns points for each suerte he completes, judges add bonus points (adicionales) for style and saved time and subtract infraction points, and the team total is the sum of all ten scored faenas. That is how Los Tamaulipecos of Reynosa reached 457 on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, a score both A Galope Tendido and El Mañana report as a new Nacional record.

It happened in charreada eliminatoria 46 at Arena Potosí, during the LXXXII Congreso y Campeonato Nacional Charro in San Luis Potosí. According to A Galope Tendido and El Mañana, the team landed all nine lazos, with 77 points in the manganas a pie and 77 more in the manganas a caballo.

The 457 broke the previous record of 456 by Rancho Los Tres Potrillos of Jalisco and put Los Tamaulipecos in provisional first in AAA, 34 points ahead of El Soyate (423). Two cautions:

  • The record is not official yet. El Mañana reports that ratification belongs to the sports authorities.
  • The standings are provisional. Qualifying is still underway, and the title is decided in the finals.

How a Team Total Is Built, Suerte by Suerte

The FMCH rulebook (2024-2028) lists nine suertes. The terna counts as two faenas, the head rope and the hind-leg rope, so a team is scored on ten. Each faena has its own table of base values, adicionales and infractions.

SuerteWhat earns the base scoreTypical range in the rulebook
Cala de caballoA complete reining pattern20 base, plus stop and spin bonuses
Piales en el lienzoStopping a running mare with a hind-leg loop, ridden14 to 30 per pial, by the style of throw
ColeaderoBringing a steer down by the tail6 to 12 per run, by how it falls
Jineteo de toro / yeguaStaying on until the animal stops buckingJudged rides from mínima to excelente (6 to 20 on the bull)
Terna en el ruedoHead loop and hind-leg loop on a bull5 to 10 for the head, 5 to 16 for the pial
Manganas a pie / a caballoRoping a running mare by the front legs10 base on foot; 10 to 16 on horseback, by the throw
Paso de la muerteChanging from a galloping horse onto a loose mare20 on the first lap, 15 on the second, 5 if the mare is stopped, walking or trotting; plus ride bonuses and 1 to 3 for an early jump on the first lap

A few things jump out of that table:

  • Harder throws pay more. In the piales, a basic throw is worth less than a pial floreado thrown backward (30). In the manganas a caballo, the classic máscara pays 10, while a contra máscara or centenario pays 14 to 16.
  • Speed counts in the coleadero. Bringing the steer down before the 30-meter mark adds 3 points, and the cleanest fall, the redonda derecha, pays the most.
  • Most of the score is individual. Each charro's points are logged by name, then added up for the team.

In Los Tamaulipecos' 457, A Galope Tendido lists a cala of 37, 105 points in the coleadero across three riders, 18 on the bull and 20 on the mare. The rest came mostly from the lazos.

The Nine Lazos: What Consumar los Lazos Means

In charro talk, consumar a lazo means completing it by the rules: the loop catches only the legs it should, the animal is stopped or brought down within the marked distance, and the roper keeps the rope and his position. A loop that misses, catches the wrong legs or breaks a rule scores nothing for that chance.

The nine lazos are the three roping faenas that each give a team three chances:

  1. Three piales en el lienzo, thrown from horseback at a mare running down the arena.
  2. Three manganas a pie, thrown on foot in the round end of the arena.
  3. Three manganas a caballo, thrown from horseback.

Why do they matter so much? Each lazo carries its own base score plus floreo bonuses, so one landed loop can be worth 20 to 30 points at elite level. Los Tamaulipecos' 77 in each set of manganas works out to about 25 per mangana, more than double the 10-point base on foot.

That makes the lazos the biggest swing in a charreada. In El Soyate's 423, reported by the FMCH, the team landed two of its three manganas a pie for 54 points. A third mangana at that level would have closed most of the 34-point gap.

The rulebook also demands variety. In the manganas, each of the three chances needs a different finish (remate), and repeating one disqualifies that chance; the pialador must also change his finish at least once across his three piales. That is why you see ropers change their spin and their throw from one loop to the next. For the rope tricks themselves, see our floreo de soga explainer.

Bonuses, Infractions and Disqualifications

The base score is only the start. Three things move it:

Adicionales (bonus points)

  • Floreo: in the manganas and the terna, spins and tricks before the throw add points by difficulty, usually 1 to 5 per move. Spins only count if the loop clearly clears the hat.
  • Time: the manganas give seven minutes per set, and each unused minute adds 1 point once at least one mangana is landed. In the terna, each saved minute adds 2.
  • Distance and finish: a pialador earns 1 point per meter beyond the regulation distance; a coleador gets up to 3 for a fast fall.

Infracciones (bad points)

Judges subtract points for errors in technique, tack and conduct. Examples straight from the rulebook:

  • Stepping past the 4-meter line when throwing a mangana or pial: 4 points.
  • A mare that goes down on her belly or sitting after a mangana: the mangana counts, with a 4-point infraction.
  • Causing a horse to bleed at the mouth, flank or anywhere else: 2 points, applied once per competition.
  • Going over the time limits in the cala, piales and jineteos costs points per minute.

Descalificaciones

Some errors cancel a chance completely. The rule that surprises newcomers: a disqualified chance scores zero, but the infraction points already collected are still subtracted from the team. That is why a faena can show a negative number. A Galope Tendido lists Los Tamaulipecos' paso de la muerte at minus 2, and the outlet wrote that the team was one step short of a complete charreada.

If two teams tie, the FMCH breaks it in this order: fewer infraction points, then more chances completed across the ten faenas, then fewer bad points in the coleadero.

What Is a Good Score? 457 vs. 423, 355 and 283

Charreada totals vary a lot, because every missed lazo or lost ride drops a whole block of points. Results at Arena Potosí show the range:

TeamScoreWhat it tells you
Los Tamaulipecos (Tamaulipas)457All nine lazos landed; record pending ratification
Rancho El Soyate (Zacatecas)423Defending champion's leading score from the first weekend
Tres Regalos Ixtul (Quintana Roo)355Advanced from the same charreada
Rancho Las Amazonas (Hidalgo)283Eliminated (one outlet reports 285)

As a rough guide, the FMCH's provisional AAA table after both Oct. 24 charreadas had Grupo Violante of Guanajuato third with 396, RG2 of San Luis Potosí fourth with 383 and Rancho El Secreto TCA of Jalisco fifth with 372. That afternoon, Charros de Jalisco's 337 was only good for 11th, and the cutoff for the semifinals rose to 336. At the 2024 Nacional, Los Tamaulipecos led an eliminatoria with 360.

So, when you read results:

  • Above 400 is exceptional at a Nacional.
  • 350 to 400 usually keeps a team in the fight.
  • Below 300 often means lost lazos or a disqualified faena.

AAA Standings and the Escaramuza's Separate Scorecard

Men's teams compete in two divisions, AAA and AA, each with its own table and its own final. A score only moves its own division's standings, so the 457 is an AAA mark.

The escaramuza is scored on a different sheet by women judges. Under the FMCH escaramuza rules (Libre category), the eight riders perform a 12-exercise routine at a gallop. Each exercise has a set value of 16, 20, 26 or 28 points, for a maximum base of 304, and the team then adds points for its puntas and adicionales and loses points for errors. Their totals often carry decimals, such as the 332.50 Reencuentro posted in the FMCH's first 2026 standings.

The coleadero also runs its own national contest alongside the team charreadas, with separate results.

What to Watch Next

  • Ratification: watch the FMCH's official channels for confirmation of the 457 as a record.
  • The AAA table: more teams still ride in qualifying, so the order can change before the semifinals start Oct. 29.
  • The finals: the AA, escaramuza, coleadero and AAA finals close the Nacional on Sunday, Nov. 1. A qualifying score does not carry the title; the finals decide it.

A quick scorecard checklist for fans

  1. Count the lazos: how many of the nine did the team land?
  2. Watch the floreo before each throw. A long, clean spin usually means bonus points.
  3. Listen for infracción from the announcer, and note when a faena shows a negative number.
  4. Compare totals only within the same division.

Frequently asked questions

How is a charreada scored?

Each charro earns a base score for every suerte he completes, judges add adicionales for floreo, distance and saved time, and subtract infraction points. The team total is the sum of ten scored faenas, because the terna counts as two.

What does consumar los lazos mean in charrería?

It means completing each roping chance by the rules. A team gets nine: three piales, three manganas a pie and three manganas a caballo. Landing all nine, as Los Tamaulipecos did on Oct. 24, 2026, is the surest route to a very high score.

What is the record score at the Nacional Charro?

Los Tamaulipecos scored 457 in AAA on Oct. 24, 2026 at Arena Potosí, passing the previous record of 456 by Rancho Los Tres Potrillos of Jalisco. As of Oct. 25 the mark still awaited official ratification.

Can a suerte score negative points?

Yes. Under FMCH rules a disqualified chance scores zero, but the infraction points collected up to that moment are still subtracted from the team, so a faena can show a negative number.

How is the escaramuza scored?

Separately from the men's teams, by women judges. In the Libre category, eight riders perform 12 exercises worth 16, 20, 26 or 28 points each, for a maximum base of 304, then add puntas and adicionales and lose points for errors.

How are ties broken in a charreada?

The FMCH gives the win to the team with fewer infraction points; if still tied, to the team that completed more chances across the ten faenas; then to the team with fewer bad points in the coleadero.
