Gstaad racehorse retires: what Coolmore announced
Gstaad racehorse fans got the news on Oct. 28, 2026: Aidan O'Brien's champion colt is retired and will stand at stud at Coolmore's Irish base in Fethard, Co. Tipperary, for the 2027 breeding season. Coolmore says his stud fee will be announced later, so any number you see before then is a guess.
The timing is neat. The Breeders' Cup opens at Keeneland on Friday, Oct. 30, a year after Gstaad won the Juvenile Turf at the championships at Del Mar.
Coolmore's Mark Byrne, quoted by the Racing Post, said Gstaad "danced every dance at the highest level for two solid seasons." That toughness is the heart of his pitch to breeders.
Who is Gstaad? Pedigree, price and people
Here's the short profile.
- Sire: Starspangledbanner, an Australian-bred stallion Coolmore calls a proven top-class sire whose stock show early speed.
- Dam: Mosa Mine, by Exceed And Excel.
- Breeder: Maywood Stud.
- Half-brother: Vandeek, a champion two-year-old who won the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes.
- Wider family: includes Anabaa, the champion sprinter who sired the great mare Goldikova.
- Price: M.V. Magnier bought him as a foal for 450,000 guineas, the top price for a colt at the 2023 Tattersalls December Foal Sale. BloodHorse put that at about US$596,000.
- Trainer: Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle.

His race record, start to finish
Gstaad raced over two seasons and almost always against the best of his age. This is his record as reported by the Racing Post, BloodHorse and the Irish Examiner.
| Season | Race | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 (age 2) | Maiden, Navan (May) | Won on debut |
| 2025 | Coventry Stakes (G2), Royal Ascot | Won by 3 lengths |
| 2025 | Prix Morny (G1) | 2nd |
| 2025 | National Stakes (G1) | 2nd |
| 2025 | Dewhurst Stakes (G1) | 2nd |
| 2025 | Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Del Mar | Won |
| 2026 (age 3) | 2,000 Guineas (G1), Newmarket | 2nd to Bow Echo |
| 2026 | Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1), Curragh | Won, track record |
| 2026 | St James's Palace Stakes (G1) | 2nd to Bow Echo |
| 2026 | Sussex Stakes (G1) | 2nd to Bow Echo |
| 2026 | Prix du Moulin (G1) | 3rd to Erdenali |
| 2026 | Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1), Ascot | 8th to Talk Of New York |
That adds up to 12 starts: 4 wins, 6 seconds, 1 third and an 8th. He finished outside the first three only once, in his final race: the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Oct. 17, where he went off the 7-4 favorite and faded. O'Brien said he "raced a little bit like a tired horse."
The Del Mar breakthrough
After three straight Group 1 seconds, Gstaad finally got his top-level win in the Juvenile Turf. Under Christophe Soumillon he missed the break from a wide draw, then took over in the stretch and won going away.
That win made O'Brien the winningest trainer in Breeders' Cup history with 21 wins, and it was his record eighth Juvenile Turf. Gstaad was later named the Cartier champion two-year-old colt.
The Irish 2,000 Guineas record
At three he won the Irish 2,000 Guineas, a Classic, in the fastest time in the race's history. The track record he broke had stood for 28 years.
The Racing Post noted his time beat famous winners such as Dubawi, Kingman and Gleneagles. Several of those became top stallions themselves.
The Bow Echo rivalry
Gstaad's three-year-old season had one problem: Bow Echo. Gstaad ran second to him in the 2,000 Guineas, the St James's Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes.
Finishing second three times sounds like a knock, but breeders read it differently. He showed up and fought at the top level again and again.
What 'retired to stud' means
When a colt is retired to stud, he stops racing and becomes a breeding stallion. He "stands" at a stud farm, and mare owners pay a stud fee (also called a cover fee) to breed their mares to him.
Thoroughbreds must be conceived by live cover, a natural mating. Artificial insemination isn't allowed in the breed, so the mare travels to the stallion.
The timeline for Gstaad
- Late 2026: he settles in at Coolmore, and the fee is expected before the season starts.
- Early 2027: his first breeding season in the Northern Hemisphere, which runs through roughly the first half of the year.
- 2028: his first foals are born, after a pregnancy of about 11 months.
- 2029: that first crop sells as yearlings.
- 2030: his first runners hit the track as two-year-olds.
So breeders are making a bet they won't see paid off for years. For a full breakdown of fees, contracts and "stands and nurses" terms, read how stud fees work.
Why breeders want a horse like Gstaad
A new stallion is judged on his race record, his pedigree and his looks. Gstaad ticks several boxes at once.
- Champion at two: two-year-old form tells breeders his foals may be quick and ready to race early. That's what commercial buyers at yearling sales pay for.
- Classic winner at three: the Irish 2,000 Guineas proves he trained on rather than peaking as a baby.
- Durability: 12 starts over two seasons, 10 of them in Group 1 races. Byrne called him "a remarkably tough and genuine racehorse."
- A speed pedigree: Starspangledbanner and a dam's family that already produced champion Vandeek.
- Physique: Byrne describes him as an athletic horse with a good walk, the kind of thing breeders inspect on stallion parades.
There's no guarantee. Plenty of great racehorses turn out to be ordinary stallions, and the only real test is how his foals run. You can learn more about why early form matters in our guide to two-year-old racehorses.
How this year's Juvenile Turf follows his path
The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is a one-mile grass race for two-year-olds. This year it's set for 5:35 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 30, at Keeneland.
O'Brien has four of the 14 runners: Great Barrier Reef, Haffner, Man's Best Friend and Florida Bay. Great Barrier Reef drew post 14, the outside, which is a lot like Gstaad's wide trip last year.
Riley Mott's How's Al Today was the morning-line favorite at 3-1 after the draw. Morning lines change and late scratches happen, so check the official program on race day. Our Juvenile Turf 2026 preview has the field in detail.
Whoever wins will start down the road Gstaad just finished. A big win here often shapes a colt's next season and, eventually, his value as a stallion.
What to watch next
- The fee announcement: Coolmore usually publishes its Irish fees before the breeding season. Don't trust guesses until then.
- Friday's Juvenile Turf: watch whether a European colt wins again and whether O'Brien adds to his record.
- Bow Echo's plans: his own future will shape how breeders compare the two rivals.
- 2028 foals: the first Gstaads arrive then, and the first runners in 2030.
