Giant Sequoia Racehorse: Frankel Colt Wins Futurity, Now a Derby Hope
An 11/1 shot a month after a flop, the Frankel colt won Britain's last Group 1 of the season by 3 lengths on heavy ground. Here's who he is, why his pedigree points to Epsom and why winter favourites often change.

Why it's trending
Giant Sequoia won the Group 1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026. It was Aidan O'Brien's record 13th win in the race, and bookmakers immediately made the colt second favourite for the 2027 Derby.
TL;DR
- Giant Sequoia (Frankel x Pink Dogwood) won the Group 1 Futurity Trophy over a mile at Doncaster on Oct. 24, 2026, at 11/1, by 3 lengths, on official heavy going.
- Dylan Browne McMonagle rode him. It was his first Group 1 win for Aidan O'Brien and O'Brien's record 13th Futurity.
- A month earlier he finished sixth, beaten 11 lengths, in the National Stakes. O'Brien blamed sickness in the yard.
- He is now second favourite for the 2027 Derby, behind stablemate Darkness Falls, the Dewhurst winner. Odds here are only a measure of reputation.
- His dam was second in the Oaks over a mile and a half, which is why people are talking about Epsom.

Who is Giant Sequoia?
The Giant Sequoia racehorse is an Irish-trained two-year-old colt by Frankel out of Pink Dogwood who won the Group 1 William Hill Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026. Trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, he started at 11/1 and won by 3 lengths, which makes him one of the names to know for next year's Derby.
He was bred in Kentucky by Resolute Bloodstock and races for Resolute Racing, Coolmore and Westerberg. He is Pink Dogwood's third foal, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.
The result surprised people because his previous run had been poor. He was sixth, beaten 11 lengths, in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh in September. O'Brien said afterwards that the horses in the yard were sick at the time.
How the 2026 Futurity Trophy was won
Seven two-year-olds ran over Doncaster's straight mile. The Racing Post result lists the official going as heavy, and the winning time of 1m 42.30s was 5.70 seconds slower than standard. That tells you how testing the ground was.
| Finish | Horse | Jockey / trainer | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Giant Sequoia | D. Browne McMonagle / A. O'Brien | 11/1 |
| 2nd (3 lengths) | Gran Dia | O. Murphy / A. Balding | 8/1 |
| 3rd (1 length) | Noble Exhibit | R. Moore / A. O'Brien | 11/8 fav |
| 4th (1 length) | Burning Up | C. Lee / K. Burke | 5/1 |
The key points from the day:
- A record for O'Brien. It was his 13th Futurity Trophy, extending his lead as the most successful trainer in the race's history.
- A milestone for the jockey. McMonagle said the race worked out perfectly, with an even pace. It was his first Group 1 for O'Brien.
- The favourite got beaten. Ryan Moore chose Noble Exhibit, and O'Brien said that colt ran green and didn't learn much.
- The runner-up ran well too. Andrew Balding called Gran Dia's effort a hell of a run from a colt who still lacks experience.
Afterwards O'Brien described Giant Sequoia as a Guineas, Derby and French Derby horse. First prize was £155,952.50.
What it means for the trainers' title
The win took O'Brien to the brink of another British trainers' championship, according to the Racing Post. irishracing.com went further and said it virtually guarantees the title. It isn't mathematically settled yet, so treat it as very likely, not done.
His record so far
The Doncaster win was not a one-off. Giant Sequoia had already won a Group race at the Curragh before that bad day in September.
| Date (2026) | Race | Result |
|---|---|---|
| June | Maiden, Curragh, 7f | 3rd on debut |
| June 27 | Maiden, Curragh, 7f | Won by 2¼ lengths |
| Aug. 22 | Futurity Stakes (Group 2), Curragh, 7f | Won by ½ length |
| September | National Stakes (Group 1), Curragh, 7f | 6th, beaten 11 lengths |
| Oct. 24 | Futurity Trophy (Group 1), Doncaster, 1m | Won by 3 lengths |
Two races called "Futurity" can cause confusion. The Futurity Stakes at the Curragh is an Irish Group 2 over seven furlongs that he won in August. The Futurity Trophy at Doncaster is the British Group 1 over a mile that he won on Saturday.
What is the Futurity Trophy?
The Futurity Trophy is a Group 1 race for two-year-old colts and fillies over one mile at Doncaster. Geldings aren't allowed. It is the last Group 1 of the British flat season, so it is the final big test for juveniles before they head into winter.
It began in 1961 as the Timeform Gold Cup. Later it became the Observer Gold Cup, then the Racing Post Trophy from 1989 to 2017, and it has carried William Hill's Futurity name since 2024. If the grading system is new to you, our guide to what a Group 1 race is explains it.
Its big draw is the distance. Most top two-year-old races are run over six or seven furlongs, and this one is a full mile. That makes it an early clue to which colts may stay the Derby trip of about a mile and a half.
Six Futurity winners have gone on to win the Derby the next year, including High Chaparral, Motivator, Authorized, Camelot and Auguste Rodin. That's a strong record, but it also means most winners don't.
Why his pedigree points to Epsom
Stamina is inherited as well as trained. When people say a colt is "bred for the Derby", they usually mean that both parents raced well, or produced winners, at middle distances.
- Sire: Frankel. He was unbeaten in 14 races, winning at up to about a mile and a quarter. As a stallion he has sired top horses from a mile to a mile and a half.
- Dam: Pink Dogwood. A Camelot filly trained by O'Brien, she was second in the Epsom Oaks over a mile and a half and third in the Irish Oaks. O'Brien remembers her as a good mare who stayed well.
- The wider family. Pink Dogwood is a full sister to Irish Derby winner Latrobe.
Put simply, the speed in this pedigree comes mostly from Frankel and the stamina from the dam's side. Winning on heavy ground over a mile at two also fits a horse who should get further at three. Still, pedigree only points the way. No one knows for sure whether he stays a mile and a half until he runs it.

Why winter Derby favourites often change by June
Right now Giant Sequoia is second favourite for the 2027 Derby, at a best price of 14/1, behind his stablemate Darkness Falls. He is also around 16/1 for the 2,000 Guineas. Treat those numbers as a reputation meter, not a forecast, and certainly not a tip.
The lists will move a lot between now and June. Here's why:
- Two-year-olds keep growing. McMonagle called Giant Sequoia "still a big baby". Some colts improve hugely over winter and others don't train on.
- Unraced horses appear in spring. Some of the best three-year-olds haven't run much, or at all, as juveniles.
- Distance sorts them out. A mile at two is a hint, but the trial races in May show who truly stays.
- One yard, many options. O'Brien has several leading colts and spreads them across the Guineas, Derby and French Derby.
The juvenile picture in Britain and Ireland is crowded. Darkness Falls beat the previously unbeaten Desert Castle by a neck in the Dewhurst Stakes on Oct. 10. A day before the Futurity, at the same Doncaster meeting, Enable's son Entrust won on debut and was quoted for the Derby too. Our explainer on two-year-old racehorses covers why juvenile form matters, and why it doesn't always last.
What to watch next
The Futurity was the last Group 1 of the British season, so Giant Sequoia's season is probably over. Top Ballydoyle juveniles usually spend the winter at home and come back in spring.
- Winter: Watch for any comments from O'Brien about which spring target he picks. The Guineas in early May and the Derby in early June are the obvious options, and he has also mentioned the French Derby.
- Spring: See whether he returns in a trial or goes straight to a classic. That choice says a lot about how the yard rates his speed and stamina.
- The stablemate question: Watch whether Darkness Falls and Giant Sequoia end up in the same race or are kept apart.
- Going: He has now won on good to firm ground in June and on heavy in October, so he has shown he can handle very different conditions.
