Dewhurst Stakes 2026: the five-runner field
The Dewhurst Stakes 2026 is on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Newmarket, and it's a straight clash between the two colts who top next year's Classic betting. Godolphin's unbeaten Desert Castle meets Coolmore's Darkness Falls over 7 furlongs, with three others in the field.
Five two-year-olds were declared on Thursday, Oct. 8. Post time is 3:00 p.m. UK time (10:00 a.m. Eastern). The winner collects £283,550.
| Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Key form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert Castle | Charlie Appleby | William Buick | Champagne Stakes (G2), Doncaster |
| Darkness Falls | Aidan O'Brien | Ryan Moore | Golden Fleece (G1), Leopardstown |
| Great Barrier Reef | Aidan O'Brien | Wayne Lordan | Coventry Stakes (G2), Royal Ascot |
| Jassas | Charlie Appleby | Billy Loughnane | Novice race, Haydock |
| Gentle Hurricane | Andrew Balding | James Doyle | 4th in the Champagne Stakes |
All five carry the same weight, 9 st 3 lb. So nobody gets a weight break, and the race comes down to raw ability.
Meet the two headliners
Desert Castle: the speedy, unbeaten Frankel colt
The Desert Castle racehorse is two-for-two. He won his debut at Newmarket, then took the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on Sept. 12 by three lengths, with Billy Loughnane aboard.
He did it while still looking green (inexperienced) in the closing stages. That win made him the early ante-post favourite for the 2027 2,000 Guineas.
- Sire: Frankel, himself a Dewhurst winner
- Owner: Godolphin
- New rider: William Buick, Godolphin's first-choice jockey, takes over from Loughnane, who rides stablemate Jassas
- Trainer's record: Appleby is chasing his fourth Dewhurst after Pinatubo (2019), Native Trail (2021) and Shadow of Light (2024)
Darkness Falls: the Camelot colt dropping back in trip
Darkness Falls, trained by Aidan O'Brien, finished third on debut over a mile at Leopardstown in July. He then won a mile maiden at the Curragh by seven lengths and, two weeks later, won the Golden Fleece Stakes at Leopardstown, run as a Group 1 for the first time, by more than four lengths.
That Golden Fleece was run over 9 furlongs. On Saturday he drops two furlongs and runs under a mile for the first time in his career.
- Sire: Camelot, who won the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby in 2012
- Owner: Coolmore partners, trained at Ballydoyle in Ireland
- Rider: Ryan Moore, confirmed on Oct. 8
- Market status: the early leader in next year's Derby betting
O'Brien has said he expects the colt to stay a mile and a quarter next year. After the Golden Fleece he weighed the Dewhurst against the Futurity Trophy, saying the colt "could have the pace for it."
The supporting cast
- Great Barrier Reef won the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June but was beaten last time in the Round Tower Stakes. He's stepping up in trip here.
- Jassas, a Dubawi colt, has won two of three, at Doncaster and Haydock.
- Gentle Hurricane was second in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes and fourth behind Desert Castle at Doncaster, beaten nearly seven lengths.
What is the Dewhurst, and why does it matter?
The Dewhurst is the top autumn race for two-year-olds in Britain. It was first run in 1875, is a Group 1 (the highest level in European racing), and is held over 7 furlongs on Newmarket's Rowley Mile. If Group vs Grade confuses you, our explainer on what a Grade 1 race is covers it.
It matters because it's a preview of next spring. The 2,000 Guineas, Britain's first Classic of the year, is run over the same Rowley Mile course, just a furlong longer.
The honor roll shows how strong the link is:
- Frankel won the 2010 Dewhurst and the 2011 2,000 Guineas
- Dawn Approach (2012), Churchill (2016) and Chaldean (2022) did the same double
- City of Troy won the 2023 Dewhurst, then the 2024 Derby
Not every winner trains on, of course. Two-year-olds are still growing, and plenty of brilliant juveniles never reach the same heights at three. For more on why racing young horses is its own puzzle, see our guide to two-year-old racehorses.
Why 7 furlongs is a different test
Seven furlongs (about 1,400 meters) sits between a sprint and a mile. That makes it the perfect question for these two colts.
The speed horse
Desert Castle has the profile of a quick, sharp colt. He broke well at Doncaster and quickened when asked.
Over 7 furlongs, early speed and a strong finishing kick usually win. A colt like this is in his comfort zone.
The horse bred to stay
Darkness Falls is by Camelot, a Derby winner, and has done his best work over a mile and 9 furlongs. Colts bred to stay longer races often need time to hit top speed.
Dropping back, he faces a faster pace than he's used to. The big question is whether he can keep up early and still have his finish when it matters.
What a win would mean for each
- If Desert Castle wins: his 2,000 Guineas claims get stronger. The question then becomes whether he stays a mile and a half for the Derby.
- If Darkness Falls wins: he'd show the speed to be a Guineas horse too. O'Brien has said he could be Ballydoyle's first Triple Crown horse since Camelot.
- If either loses narrowly: don't write them off. A juvenile race in October is one data point, not a verdict.
Godolphin vs Coolmore and Future Champions weekend
This race is also the latest round of European racing's biggest rivalry. Godolphin is the racing operation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Its breeding arm, Darley, sponsors the Dewhurst.
Coolmore is the Irish breeding giant whose horses are trained by Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle. O'Brien has won the Dewhurst seven times since 2009, including with City of Troy.
Each team brings two runners on Saturday. Both are chasing the same thing: next spring's Classics and, later, a stallion career worth far more than any prize.
The Dewhurst headlines Newmarket's Future Champions Festival, a two-day meeting focused on young horses:
- Friday, Oct. 9: the Group 1 Fillies' Mile, the top race for two-year-old fillies
- Saturday, Oct. 10: the Dewhurst, plus the Cesarewitch, a long-distance handicap
A week later, the action moves to Ascot for British Champions Day 2026.
What to watch on Saturday
Use this checklist to follow the race like a pro, even if it's your first time:
- Post time: 3:00 p.m. UK time = 10:00 a.m. Eastern = 7:00 a.m. Pacific.
- The paddock: watch for sweating or fidgeting. Young horses can get worked up by a big crowd.
- The early pace: if Darkness Falls is pushed along to keep up in the first half, that's the trip question in action.
- The Dip: the Rowley Mile has a famous downhill-then-uphill section near the finish. Horses that stay balanced there often win.
- The final furlong: watch whether Desert Castle still looks green or keeps a straight line under Buick.
- After the race: listen to what Appleby and O'Brien say about the winter and the 2,000 Guineas, run next May over the same course.

Frequently asked questions
When and where is the Dewhurst Stakes 2026?
Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. UK time (10:00 a.m. Eastern) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket, England, over 7 furlongs.
Who is running in the 2026 Dewhurst?
Five colts: Desert Castle (William Buick), Darkness Falls (Ryan Moore), Great Barrier Reef (Wayne Lordan), Jassas (Billy Loughnane) and Gentle Hurricane (James Doyle).
Is Desert Castle unbeaten?
Yes. He has won both starts: his debut at Newmarket and the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on Sept. 12, by three lengths.
Why is Darkness Falls dropping back in distance?
After his Golden Fleece win, Aidan O'Brien weighed the Dewhurst against the Futurity Trophy and said the colt could have the pace for it. He has raced only at a mile or further, so this first try under a mile it tests whether he has enough speed as well as stamina.
Does the Dewhurst winner usually win the 2,000 Guineas?
Not always, but often enough to matter. Frankel, Dawn Approach, Churchill and Chaldean all did the double, and City of Troy went on to win the Derby.
What is Future Champions weekend?
A two-day Newmarket meeting for top young horses. The Group 1 Fillies' Mile is on Friday and the Dewhurst is on Saturday.
