British Champions Day 2026: Bay City Roller's Ascot-Keeneland Double
Two weeks after chasing Daryz home in the Arc, Bay City Roller is set for Ascot's Champion Stakes, with Keeneland planned two weeks after that. No horse has won both the Champion Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year since 2000.

Why it's trending
On Oct. 7, trainer George Scott told Racing Post that Arc runner-up Bay City Roller will run in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Oct. 17, then the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31. That is a rare double, last completed by Kalanisi in 2000.
TL;DR
- British Champions Day 2026 is Saturday, Oct. 17 at Ascot: £4.35 million in prize money and five Group 1 races. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., and racing runs from 12:55 to 4:40 p.m. UK time.
- The headline race is the Champion Stakes, a 1¼-mile Group 1. It is also the last Win and You're In race of the 2026 Breeders' Cup Challenge series, so the winner earns a fees-paid spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf, as long as the horse is nominated to the Breeders' Cup by the Oct. 19 pre-entry deadline.
- Trainer George Scott says Arc runner-up Bay City Roller will run at Ascot and then in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31, about two weeks apart each time.
- The last horse to win both races in the same year was Kalanisi in 2000, when the Champion Stakes was still run at Newmarket. King Of Steel won at Ascot in 2023 and then finished fifth in the Turf.
- Racing Post names Ombudsman and Calandagan as the market leaders, with Bay City Roller next. The field isn't official until declarations are published.

British Champions Day 2026: what's happening and why it matters
British Champions Day 2026 is on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Ascot. It is the finale of the British flat season, with £4.35 million in prize money and five Group 1 races, headed by the Champion Stakes. This year's big storyline is that a horse who just finished second in Europe's most famous race is coming straight back for more.
That horse is Bay City Roller. On Oct. 7, trainer George Scott told Racing Post the colt is back in Newmarket and so full of himself that he nearly threw his rider off that morning. The plan is the Qatar Champion Stakes at Ascot, then the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
It's a bold schedule. The Arc was Oct. 4, so Bay City Roller would run three elite races in under four weeks, with a flight across the Atlantic before the last one.
Who is Bay City Roller?
Bay City Roller is a four-year-old colt by New Bay, trained by George Scott at Eve Lodge Stables in Newmarket and usually ridden by Oisin Murphy. He's a two-time Group 1 winner.
- Preis von Bayern (Germany), November 2025: his first Group 1.
- Coronation Cup, Epsom, June 6, 2026: won by 10 lengths on soft ground. It was Scott's first Group 1 win in Britain.
- Prix Foy, September 2026: beaten by Daryz in the main Arc prep.
- Arc de Triomphe, Oct. 4, 2026: second to Daryz again, from the wide stall 15. Murphy kept him on his own early, took the lead two furlongs out, and was caught late.
He missed most of June, July and August because the ground was too fast. Scott says that light summer is part of why the horse is still fresh. His wish for Ascot is simple: rain.

What is British Champions Day?
British Champions Day began in 2011. It gathered several of Britain's top autumn championship races onto one Saturday at Ascot. Think of it as the season's closing ceremony: the best horses in each division settle their arguments before most of them head off for the winter.
The big races on the card
The order of races and post times can change from year to year, so check Ascot's official race-times page before you plan your day. The 2025 card ran in this shape:
| Race | Distance | For | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Distance Cup | About 2 miles | 3yo+ stayers | Group 1 (since 2025) |
| Sprint Stakes | 6 furlongs | 3yo+ sprinters | Group 1 |
| Fillies & Mares Stakes | 1½ miles | 3yo+ fillies and mares | Group 1 |
| Queen Elizabeth II Stakes | 1 mile | 3yo+ milers | Group 1 |
| Champion Stakes | 1¼ miles | 3yo+ middle-distance horses | Group 1 |
The card is filled out by a juvenile conditions race and the Balmoral Handicap, a big-field one-mile handicap that closes the day.
The Long Distance Cup was upgraded to Group 1 in 2025, which gave Champions Day five Group 1 races. New to Group vs Grade? Our explainer on what a Grade 1 race is covers it.
Why the Champion Stakes is the main event
The Champion Stakes is run over 1¼ miles (about 2,000 meters) on Ascot's turf, for horses aged three and up. In 2025 it was the richest race on the card, worth £1.3 million.
It's also part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The 2026 series ends with this race, and the winner earns a fees-paid starting spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf, but only if the horse is nominated to the Breeders' Cup by the Oct. 19 pre-entry deadline. Breeders' Cup starters based outside North America can also receive a $40,000 travel allowance. Our guide to Win and You're In races explains the system.
Racing Post lists the Champion Stakes at 4:00 p.m. UK time, which is 11:00 a.m. Eastern in the US and 9:00 a.m. in Mexico City. Ascot's final card is the one to trust.
The Ascot-to-Keeneland double: why it's so rare
According to Racing Post, the last horse to win both the Champion Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year was Kalanisi in 2000. Back then the Champion Stakes was still run at Newmarket. Kalanisi, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, won the Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4, 2000.
Many have tried since. King Of Steel won the Champion Stakes at Ascot in 2023, then finished fifth behind Auguste Rodin in the Turf at Santa Anita.
Why is it so hard?
- Different distances. The Champion is 1¼ miles and the Turf is 1½ miles. Kalanisi was stepping up in trip for the first time at Churchill Downs.
- Different ground. Autumn Ascot is often soft. American turf courses usually ride firmer and faster, with tighter turns.
- Travel. There's a transatlantic flight, a new barn and a new routine, all inside two weeks.
- Late season. By late October, most top European horses have had a long year. Many owners retire them or rest them for the winter instead.
- Fresh rivals. Some US-based opponents and European horses who skipped Ascot arrive with fewer hard races behind them.
The Turf's own form guide is in our Breeders' Cup Turf 2026 preview.
What does 'backs up well' mean?
In racing slang, a horse that backs up well can run a big race and be ready for another hard race soon after, without losing form. Most top horses get several weeks between Group 1 starts. Bay City Roller is being asked to go about 13 days from the Arc to Ascot, then 14 days from Ascot to Keeneland.
Scott's evidence is the horse's spring. Bay City Roller finished second in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh and then won the Coronation Cup by 10 lengths 13 days later.
How trainers judge it
There's no single test. Trainers watch a set of everyday signs, many of which any owner can recognize:
- Appetite. Does the horse clean up its feed the night after the race and the days that follow?
- Weight and condition. Has it held its body weight, or looks tucked up and lean?
- Legs and soundness. Check for heat, swelling or stiffness, and watch a trot-up on a firm surface.
- Attitude. Is it bright and keen in the morning, or dull and reluctant? Scott's line about nearly being bucked off is exactly this kind of sign.
- Vet checks. Many top yards use vet exams and bloodwork to look for hidden tiredness or infection.
- Work. Does a light gallop feel easy, and how fast does the horse recover its breathing afterward?
The same habits are useful in any barn. Our health basics and care guide pages cover daily checks for leisure horses too.
Who else to watch at Ascot
Racing Post's Oct. 7 report names Ombudsman and Calandagan as the Champion Stakes market leaders, with Bay City Roller third. Calandagan was fourth, well beaten, behind Bay City Roller at Epsom in June, so a rematch on Ascot ground would be interesting.
Racing Post also mentions other possible runners, including Almaqam, Wimbledon Hawkeye, Arc winner Daryz and Gstaad. None of these is a confirmed runner. The official field comes out at declarations, a couple of days before the race.
What to watch next
- The going. Ascot publishes ground updates all week. Rain helps Bay City Roller, by his trainer's own account.
- Declarations. Check the declared field for the Champion Stakes and the other Group 1s once it's published.
- Race day, Oct. 17. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. and the first race is at 12:55 p.m. UK time. Tickets start at £32 on the official site.
- The morning after. Listen to Scott's update on how the horse ate and trotted up. That will decide the Keeneland trip.
- Breeders' Cup, Oct. 30-31. The Turf is on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

Is Bay City Roller running in the Breeders' Cup?
That's the plan. Trainer George Scott says he'll run in the Champion Stakes on Oct. 17 and then the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31, as long as he comes out of Ascot well.
Who was the last horse to win the Champion Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year?
Kalanisi, in 2000, trained by Sir Michael Stoute. The Champion Stakes was run at Newmarket then. It moved to Ascot when British Champions Day began in 2011.
Does the Champion Stakes winner get into the Breeders' Cup?
Yes, with one condition. It's the last Win and You're In race of the 2026 Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner earns a fees-paid spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf if it is nominated to the Breeders' Cup by the Oct. 19 pre-entry deadline. Starters based outside North America can also get a $40,000 travel allowance.
What does it mean when a horse 'backs up well'?
It means the horse recovers quickly from a hard race and can run well again within a short gap, often two weeks or less. Trainers judge it from appetite, weight, sound legs, attitude, vet checks and how easily the horse handles light work.
