Entrust Racehorse: Enable's Son Wins on Debut, Now 20/1 for the Derby

Enable's first foal to reach the racecourse won a Doncaster novice by 2¾ lengths on Oct. 23. Bookmakers jumped to Derby prices, but his trainers are putting him away until spring.

Entrust, the Dubawi colt out of double Arc winner Enable, won on his debut at Doncaster on Oct. 23, 2026, and fans of his mother flooded X with clips and Derby talk.

TL;DR

  • Entrust (Dubawi x Enable) won the 1-mile British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes at Doncaster on Oct. 23, 2026, by 2¾ lengths at 3/1, on heavy ground.
  • He is Enable's first foal to race, not her first foal. Her first, Encompass by Kingman, never raced, and her second, Envisage, hasn't run yet.
  • Sky Bet and Paddy Power cut him to 20/1 for the 2027 Derby. That's a betting price on a horse with one run, not a forecast.
  • Thady Gosden called him still green and babyish. The plan is a rest over winter and a novice race in the spring.

Who is the Entrust racehorse?

The Entrust racehorse is a 2-year-old colt by Dubawi out of Enable, one of the greatest racemares of the modern era, and he won on his debut at Doncaster on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026. He is owned and bred by Juddmonte, trained by John and Thady Gosden (John Gosden trained his mother) and was ridden by Colin Keane.

He won the 1-mile British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes by 2¾ lengths at a starting price of 3/1. After the race, Sky Bet and Paddy Power quoted him at 20/1 for next June's Derby.

Quick facts

  • Born: May 7, 2024, a late foal for his age group
  • Sire / dam: Dubawi / Enable (by Nathaniel)
  • Owner and breeder: Juddmonte
  • Trainers: John & Thady Gosden
  • Record: 1 start, 1 win

First to race, not first foal

A lot of posts called Entrust "Enable's first foal." He isn't. He is her third foal and the first to reach the racecourse.

  • Encompass (2022, by Kingman) never raced and now stands as a stallion in Cyprus.
  • Envisage (2023, by Dubawi), Entrust's full sister, hadn't raced as of this week.
  • Entrust (2024, by Dubawi) is the one who just won.

How Entrust won at Doncaster

Ten 2-year-olds lined up for the 3:55 race, and the ground was officially heavy. Entrust was keen early, settled in midfield and was travelling strongly two furlongs out with only Zajal ahead of him.

He then went past and quickened clear. Zajal (Charlie Appleby / Godolphin) was second, with Godolphin's Age Of Reason 2½ lengths further back in third. The favourite, Wellington Square, finished seventh.

The winning time, 1:46.54, was more than 10 seconds slower than standard for the trip. That shows how much the mud took out of the field.

Keane said the colt had a lot of raw ability and would likely prefer better ground. Thady Gosden called him still green and babyish.

Who was Enable?

Enable was Juddmonte's homebred champion mare by Nathaniel, trained by John Gosden and ridden in almost all her races by Frankie Dettori. She won 15 of 19 starts, including 11 Group 1 races, before retiring in October 2020.

Her biggest wins:

  • Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2017 and 2018, one of only a handful of horses to win it twice
  • King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2017, 2019 and 2020, the first horse to win it three times
  • Breeders' Cup Turf in 2018 at Churchill Downs
  • The Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks, two Yorkshire Oaks and the Eclipse

What is a novice stakes?

In British flat racing, a novice race is an entry-level race for horses early in their careers. Unlike a maiden, it's open to horses that have already won, but previous winners carry extra weight, called a penalty.

Many good 2-year-olds start in novices. It's a low-pressure place to learn about starting stalls, crowds and racing in a group. This one was a Class 3 race worth about £7,000 to the winner, which is modest money for a horse with a famous pedigree.

That's why Gosden's spring plan is a novice "with a penalty." Entrust can run in one again, but he'll carry extra weight for having won. Read more about how two-year-old racehorses are brought along.

Why a heavy-ground debut win matters

Heavy ground means deep, soft, wet turf. It's so testing that some meetings get called off, as our explainer on why races are abandoned shows.

Winning on it first time out tells you a few things:

  • He handled the conditions mentally. Many debutants struggle with mud kicked in their faces and the hard work of soft ground.
  • He has some stamina. A mile on heavy ground races much longer than a mile on good ground.
  • He may be better on faster ground. Keane thinks so, and the Derby is usually run on quicker turf in June.

The caution: soft-ground form can be hard to read. Half the field may simply have hated the conditions.

Why champion mares' foals are often slow to start

Fans expect a champion's son to arrive as a star. In reality, many sons and daughters of great mares race late, run moderately or never race at all. Here's why:

  • Regression to the mean. A mare like Enable is a genetic outlier. Even with a top stallion, her foals will most likely be good rather than great.
  • Late maturing families. Enable herself only came out late in her 2-year-old season, and Entrust is a May foal, younger than most of his rivals.
  • Patient owners. A colt like this is worth far more as a future stallion if he stays sound. Connections rarely rush him.
  • Bad luck. Injuries, illness and immaturity stop many well-bred horses before they ever run.
  • Different paths. Some, like Encompass, go straight to stud careers without racing.

What do "Entrust Derby odds" of 20/1 mean?

The Derby is Britain's premier classic for 3-year-olds, run over about 1½ miles at Epsom in early June. Ante-post odds are prices offered months before a race, often before the horse is even entered.

At 20/1, the bookmaker is saying it thinks Entrust is a long shot, but one worth headlining. Some things to know:

  • They're marketing as much as maths. A famous name gets a price fast because it draws attention.
  • Many ante-post horses never make the race. Injuries, a lack of stamina or a change of plan can rule them out.
  • One win isn't a form line. Many judges prefer to see a horse run in a Group race before taking Derby claims seriously.

Horse Academy doesn't give betting advice. Treat Derby talk as early excitement, not a forecast.

What to watch next

  • Winter: Entrust will be turned out to rest and grow. Expect little news until spring.
  • Spring 2027: A comeback in a novice race carrying a penalty is the stated plan. Watch for the going and the distance.
  • Envisage: His 3-year-old full sister could still appear on the track. Her first run would be another family milestone.
  • The Derby trials: Races like the Dante at York and the trials at Lingfield and Chester show who's really on the Derby path.

Frequently asked questions

Is Entrust Enable's first foal?

No. He is her third foal and the first to race. Encompass (2022, by Kingman) never raced and stands at stud in Cyprus, and Envisage (2023, by Dubawi) hadn't raced as of October 2026.

Who trains and rides Entrust?

John and Thady Gosden train him for Juddmonte, which bred him. Colin Keane, Juddmonte's main jockey, rode him on debut.

How many Group 1 races did Enable win?

Eleven, from 15 wins in 19 starts. They include two Arcs, three King Georges, the Breeders' Cup Turf, the Epsom and Irish Oaks, two Yorkshire Oaks and the Eclipse.

When will Entrust race again?

Not this year. Thady Gosden said he'll be put away for the winter and probably return in a spring novice race carrying a penalty. No date has been set.

Does 20/1 mean Entrust will run in the Derby?

No. Ante-post odds are early bookmaker prices, not a plan or a prediction. He has run once, and many horses quoted this early never make the Derby line-up.
