Cuetzalan Huipil and Coffee Fair 2026: what's on for horse people

The Cuetzalan Huipil and Coffee Fair 2026 (Feria Nacional del Huipil y el Café) runs October 2–11 in Cuetzalan del Progreso, in Puebla's Sierra Norte. The two horse events are the Rodeo de Medianoche on October 3 at the Plaza del Jaripeo "David Molina Rosas" and the traditional cabalgata on October 9, which the programs pair with a "Gran Huapangueada" (a huapango music party).

Infobae and El Financiero describe the fair as a mix of textiles, coffee and the San Francisco de Asís patron festivities. Infobae counts it as the 75th National Coffee Fair and the 61st National Huipil Fair. Most concerts at the Teatro del Pueblo are free; the rodeo and the closing dance are ticketed.

Dates at a glance

DateHorse eventNotes
Oct 3Rodeo de MedianochePlaza del Jaripeo; paid entry

Every other date is music, crafts, coffee and church celebrations. Headliners include Majo Aguilar, El Komander and Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho, and the Huipil Queen coronation is on Sunday, October 4, the feast of San Francisco de Asís. Carta de México puts the Coffee Queen coronation on opening night, Friday, October 2, with Majo Aguilar; a later local report may place that contest on October 3, so check the official lineup.

Check the times before you go

Here is what is solid and what is not. The dates (Oct 3 and Oct 9) and the rodeo venue match across the outlets we opened, and Infobae reports that the rodeo is ticketed. Infobae, Carta de México and Escapadah name the rodeo bands as Cuernos Chuecos, Tierra Sagrada and La Charrada, but a later local report reportedly swaps in La Garra Norteña, so treat the bill as unconfirmed.

A local report puts the cabalgata at 10:00 a.m., leaving from the Presidencia Auxiliar of Santiago Yancuitlalpan. We could not find that time or meeting point in the outlets we opened, and none of them gave a rodeo start time or ticket prices. Confirm with the Cuetzalan municipal government or tourism office, or on their official channels, before you plan around either.

What a cabalgata is in the Sierra Norte

A cabalgata is a group ride, often tied to a patron saint or a fair. Riders gather at a community point, travel together to the town center and arrive to music and applause. For the general history, see What Is a Cabalgata?.

In Cuetzalan the ride moves through steep, narrow, paved and cobbled streets in a humid mountain climate. Expect a crowd on foot along the route, so plan for limited room.

What the Rodeo de Medianoche is

"Jaripeo" in much of Mexico means a bull- and bronc-riding rodeo, usually with live banda music. A midnight edition is the night show of the fair: paid, loud and late. We won't repeat the full explainer; read What Is Jaripeo? first if the term is new.

For another Puebla fair weekend, see Feria Zaragoza Puebla 2026. If the side-saddle riding you see at fairs interests you, read What Is Escaramuza Charra?.

Visiting with kids

Daytime is the easy part: free concerts, crafts, huipil weaving and coffee. The cabalgata is the best horse event for children because it is daytime and outdoors.

  • Rodeo de Medianoche: a late, loud, crowded show, likely with alcohol sales; most families with young children will skip it.
  • Stand back from the route: keep kids on the sidewalk side, well away from hooves, and hold hands on narrow streets.
  • Ear protection: fireworks and amplified music are common at fairs; small kids may need earmuffs.
  • Weather: October in the Sierra Norte can be wet and foggy. Bring rain jackets and shoes with grip for slick stone.

Our guides on horse safety for kids and the safety hub cover the basics.

Horse-event etiquette

Fair horses are working animals in a stressful setting. A few habits keep everyone safe:

  1. Ask before you touch. Riders may say yes; a horse mid-ride should not be petted.
  2. Never walk behind a horse. Stay visible at the shoulder or well to the side.
  3. No sudden noise at close range. Avoid popping balloons or fireworks near animals.
  4. Don't step into the route for a selfie. Horses can't stop quickly on slopes.
  5. Keep dogs leashed or leave them at home.
  6. Don't feed treats to horses you don't know.
  7. Respect the tradition. The ride is part of a religious and community festival, not only a show.

Some riders may wear traditional dress. Ask before photographing people, especially those who wear huipiles as part of their indigenous communities.

Practical checklist and what to watch next

  • Confirm times and tickets with official channels before you travel.
  • Book lodging early; a ten-day fair can fill a small town.
  • Arrive early for the cabalgata and choose a spot on a wider stretch of street.
  • Carry cash for small vendors and coffee.
  • Wear closed shoes you can walk in on steep stone.

Watch for an official program update fixing the rodeo start time, ticket prices and the cabalgata route. Other Mexican horse-culture events are on the calendar too, including the Charreria National Championship 2026 and Expo Ganadera Jalisco 2026. We report no results from either Cuetzalan event because neither has happened yet.
