Why Charo celebrates Independence again in October

Mexico's Grito is Sept. 15-16, and Charo gave its own Grito in September too, as Encuentro de Michoacán reported. So a second Fiestas Patrias in October surprises visitors. The October date is local. On Oct. 20, 1810, about a month after the uprising began, Morelos met Hidalgo on the road from Charo to Indaparapeo, east of today's Morelia.

There Hidalgo explained the movement's goal, political independence for Mexico. According to historian Carlos Herrejón Peredo, he made Morelos his lieutenant and told him to raise troops on the southern coast and take Acapulco. That is why Charo remembers the day as the start of Morelos's southern campaign. Mexico's national history institute, INEHRM, keeps a photo of a scale model captioned the meeting of Hidalgo and Morelos in Charo, Oct. 20, 1810.

That's why the civic act, the parade and the Cabalgata Morelos are on Oct. 20 itself, with the Presea Hidalgo y Morelos the day before. The mayor framed it as a reminder that these were key days for national Independence, and they happened in Charo.

How a patriotic cabalgata works

A cabalgata is an organized group ride, often dozens or hundreds of riders, that travels a set route and arrives at a symbolic point. Patriotic cabalgatas are usually civic rides: riders carry flags, wear charro or ranch clothes, and are welcomed with music. Read the full explainer in What Is a Cabalgata?.

The usual shape of the day

  1. Riders gather early at a meeting point, often a ranch or the edge of town.
  2. Organizers set the order: flag bearers and authorities first, then groups and families.
  3. The group rides at a walk, with stops for water and rest.
  4. A support truck follows with water, a trailer for tired or lame horses and first aid.
  5. The cabalgata arrives at the arch or plaza, often at a fixed time, for a welcome ceremony.

Horse prep checklist for riders

  • Feet: have the farrier check shoes or trim 1-2 weeks before, not the day before. Pavement is hard on loose shoes.
  • Fitness: a horse that hasn't been ridden in months should build up with longer walks over 2-3 weeks.
  • Tack: check the cinch, billets and bridle for cracks. A sore back from a poorly fitting saddle shows up halfway through, not at the start. See tack and equipment.
  • Crowds and noise: practice around flags, music and traffic. Charo's program includes fireworks. Our desensitizing steps help.
  • Calm only: a young, buddy-sour or spooky horse is better left home than ridden into a packed plaza.

Water and rest

Arrivals at 12:30 and 2:00 p.m. mean riding through the warmest part of the day. The British Horse Society notes a 500 kg horse may need 50-70 liters of water a day in hot weather.

  • Offer water at every stop. Horses drink better when relaxed, so don't rush them.
  • Loosen the cinch and rest in shade when you can.
  • Warning signs: fast breathing that won't settle, flared nostrils, dullness, muscle spasms or a horse that stops sweating. Get off, find shade, cool with water and call a vet.
  • Unsaddle, walk and water the horse after the ceremony before you join the party.

The Feria Ganadera and the pueblo jaripeo

A feria ganadera is a livestock fair. In a town like Charo it usually means cattle, horses and other animals on display, local producers and a family atmosphere. This one opens the whole celebration on Oct. 18 at 2:00 p.m.

A jaripeo is Mexico's ranch-style rodeo. Riders try to stay on a bucking bull (sometimes a horse) while a banda plays, and in a pueblo jaripeo the show often rolls straight into a dance, the jaripeo-baile. Charo lists three, all with free entry, two with a raffle for a semental. Our jaripeo explainer covers the roles, gear and vocabulary.

Family viewing tips

  • Pick your spot early: the sidewalk near Plaza Cuauhtémoc or the Arco de la Entrada, behind any barrier.
  • Never stand behind a horse, and keep kids from darting into the street to pet one.
  • Don't feed the horses. Riders need hands free and horses can nip.
  • No sudden surprises: opening umbrellas, balloons and confetti cannons near horses can start a spook.
  • Plan for noise: the 6:00 a.m. alborada and the castillo use fireworks. Ear protection helps small kids.
  • Bring water, hats and sunscreen for midday arrivals.

More general tips are in horse safety and our guide for parents and teachers.

What to watch next

  • Oct. 18: Feria Ganadera and first jaripeo.
  • Oct. 19-20: both cabalgatas and the main civic day.
