Cesarewitch 2026: what it is and when it runs
Cesarewitch 2026 is the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch, a £175,000 handicap for horses aged three and up over 2 miles 2 furlongs at Newmarket. It goes at 3:40pm UK time (10:40am ET) on Saturday, October 10, 2026, on the Future Champions Festival card that also features the Dewhurst Stakes. This guide was written before the race, so no result is known.
Racing Post reported 29 runners declared on October 8, in a race that allows a maximum of 32. Last year's winner Beylerbeyi, trained by Ian Williams, is in the field and is booked to be ridden again by Billy Loughnane. He is bidding to become the first horse to win the Cesarewitch in back-to-back years.

What is a staying handicap?
A staying handicap is a race over a long trip, well beyond a mile and a half, in which every runner carries a different weight. The idea is to give every horse a roughly equal chance. At 2 miles 2 furlongs (3,621 metres), the Cesarewitch is one of the longest and most famous flat races of its kind in Britain.
"Staying" simply means a horse can keep going at a steady pace over a long distance. Stamina is the main ingredient, and the best stayers often look unremarkable over shorter trips.
How handicap weights work
Each horse is given an official rating by the handicapper, based on past performances. The higher the rating, the more weight the horse carries, and the best-rated runner is "top weight". Weights are measured in stones and pounds (14 pounds to a stone), and the weight includes the jockey, saddle and any lead added to make up the difference.
Think of it as a head start in reverse. A well-rated horse carries more, a lesser-rated horse carries less, and in theory the field finishes bunched together.
- Top weight: the highest-rated horse in the race.
- Swing in the weights: how a horse's weight changes compared with a previous run or last year. Beylerbeyi's trainer has pointed to it as a challenge this year.
- Weight-carrying: a horse that wins repeatedly is raised, so it carries more next time.
The 32-runner maximum and the draw
A big field is normal in this race. Many more horses are entered than can run, so when the final declarations come out, only the top-rated ones get in up to the safety limit of 32. Declarations are the stage where trainers confirm which horses will actually go to post.
With a field that big, position and traffic matter. Each runner is given a stall number by draw, and jockeys have to find room among 29 horses (this year's declared number) over a long run.
A short history of the Cesarewitch
The first Cesarewitch was run in 1839 and won by Cruiskeen. The name is an anglicised form of "Tsesarevich", the Russian imperial heir; Tsesarevich Alexander, later Tsar Alexander II, gave £300 to the Jockey Club. It was founded the same year as the Cambridgeshire, and the two races were once known together as the Autumn Double.
It finishes on Newmarket's Rowley Mile course and is run each October.
Some notable records:
- Aaim To Prosper has won the most times, twice (2010, 2012).
- Doug Smith rode the most winners, six.
- The most successful trainers are William Day and Mathew Dawson, with four wins each.
- Beylerbeyi won in 2025 for Ian Williams and Loughnane.
Stamina tests versus sprints
A sprint is over in a minute or so, and it rewards speed and a clean start. A race like this lasts around four minutes, so pace judgement is everything. Jockeys often hold horses up early, save energy and make a move late.
It also asks different things of the horse. A stayer needs an efficient stride, a good cardiovascular system and the temperament to settle. Go too early and the horse runs out of petrol in the final furlong.
| Sprint | Staying handicap | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical time | Under 1½ minutes | Around 4 minutes |
| Key quality | Speed, gate manners | Stamina, settling |
| Tactics | Early pace | Patience, late move |

What to watch on Saturday
Here are the things worth following if you tune in:
- Beylerbeyi's weight: can last year's winner carry a higher weight over the trip?
- The pace: does a front-runner set a strong gallop, or does the field dawdle?
- The final two furlongs: staying races are often decided by who still has something left, not who is fastest.
- Jockey bookings: Ryan Moore is booked on Dawn Rising.
After Saturday, the next big British date is British Champions Day at Ascot. If you are new to the sport, the glossary helps with the jargon.
