Arena Potosí Triple Crown quarter horse show: what and when

The Arena Potosí Triple Crown quarter horse competition, "El Triunfo Legendario," runs Nov 5–8, 2026, at Arena Potosí in the city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Entry to the horse classes is free; Friday's coleadero and Saturday's night charreada are ticketed.

The program was presented at a press conference on Oct 28. Speakers included Carla Arceo Arámbula, president of CCCM México; Cristopher Pérez Vargas, general director of Arena Potosí; and Francisco Javier Serrano Altuzar, head of the state sports institute, Inpode.

Pérez Vargas said the goal is to draw visitors and give hotels, restaurants and shops a lift. Arena Potosí's official event page describes the riders as competitors in cala de caballo, charrería's reining-style test, across several categories.

This is the schedule Quadratín SLP and Potosinoticias published on Oct 28. Times are start times; each day runs as long as the entries take.

The Saturday night charreada

The night charreada at Arena Potosí features the teams Cortijo Mobil and San Carlos La Estancia, plus a third team organizers haven't named yet. Live bands are on the bill.

If it's your first charreada, it helps to know what earns points. Our explainer How Is Charrería Scored? walks through the events and scoring in five minutes.

Friday's coleadero

In the coleadero, a charro at full gallop takes hold of a steer's tail and rolls it. To see what judges look for, read What Is Coleadero?.

What it costs

  • Horse classes: free entry, according to organizers.
  • Coleadero and charreada: ticketed. Plano Deportivo described the price as "affordable," but no figures have been released.
  • Sunday, Nov 8: the venue lists the event through that day, but no program has been published.

What is a Futurity, and what is a Derby?

You'll hear these two English words at almost every quarter horse show in Mexico. Both are age-restricted classes for young horses.

Futurity: a young horse's debut

A Futurity is limited to horses from a single foal crop. In cala, that usually means three-year-olds: the 2026 Caladero Futurity of Mexico's Circuito Excelencia Charra, for example, accepted only horses born in 2023 with AQHA or APHA papers.

The name comes from betting on the "future." Breeders nominate and train the horse months ahead, and the class becomes a showcase for which stallions and trainers produce good young horses.

Derby: the next step up

A Derby is for slightly older horses that have moved past the Futurity stage. They are often four to six years old, but each show's rules set the exact ages, so check the entry conditions.

Judges expect more polish in a Derby: cleaner stops, more confident spins and a horse that clearly knows its job.

Beginner, intermediate and professional

Within each class, riders are split by experience. That keeps a first-season rider from going head to head with a trainer who shows all year.

Why there are youth and women's divisions

Saturday, Nov 7, is the most family-friendly day, with amateur, youth, kids' and women's classes. Splitting riders this way is practical:

  • Fair competition: a 12-year-old shouldn't be scored against an adult with decades in the saddle.
  • A pipeline: kids' and youth classes are where the next generation of charros and cala riders learns to compete.
  • More women in the arena: a women's division gives female riders on reining horses their own stage, beyond the side-saddle escaramuza.
  • Reliable horses: kids' classes tend to feature older, calm, very well-trained horses. If you're shopping for a family horse, those are the ones to study.

What to watch in a cala de caballo

Because the venue describes the event as cala de caballo, here's what you'll likely see if the format follows charro rules, as in the Excelencia Charra calas:

  1. The stop (punta and raya): the horse gallops in and stops hard, sliding its hind feet and leaving marks in the dirt. The slide is measured.
  2. The turns (lados): fast spins on the hind legs in both directions, judged for speed and cleanliness.
  3. The back-up (ceja): the horse backs in a straight line.
  4. The bit check: after the run, judges inspect the horse's mouth.

Watch how quiet the horse looks. Gaping mouths, head tossing or fighting the reins usually cost points. The best run looks easy.

Family visitor guide

Before you go

  • Check Arena Potosí's social channels for confirmed times, the third team and charreada ticket prices.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and water; sessions start mid-morning.
  • Pack a jacket for the night charreada, since November evenings in San Luis Potosí get cool.
  • Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to park and pick your seats without rushing.

Staying safe around horses

  • Ask before touching. Always check with the rider or handler before approaching a horse.
  • Never stand behind a horse. Approach from the side, near the shoulder, where it can see you.
  • No flash, balloons or pop-open umbrellas. They spook young horses, and at a Futurity almost every horse is young.
  • Hold kids' hands in barn aisles and warm-up areas. Horses move quickly and riders are focused.
  • Don't feed any horse. Many are on controlled diets.

Our safety page has more tips for kids and beginners.

What to watch next

  • The third charreada team. Organizers have promised to announce it.
  • Ticket prices for the coleadero and charreada.
  • The Sunday, Nov 8 program. If a final or awards session is added, it will come through official channels.
  • Results. There are no winners yet because the competition hasn't started. We'll update this guide once official results are out.

If this gets you hooked on charrería, you don't have to wait for Nov 5: the 2026 Charrería National Championship is underway at this same Arena Potosí and wraps up on Sunday, Nov 1, with the caladero (cala) final on Saturday, Oct 31.
