Poll
The area just behind the ears. Helps the horse bend and balance the head and neck.
A closer look
The poll is the top of the head just behind the ears, where the skull joins the first bone of the neck. This flexible joint lets the horse nod, tilt, and turn its head. The crownpiece of the halter and the bridle rests right over the poll.
Why it matters
The poll is sensitive, and pressure there is part of how halters and bridles work. Horses that pull back hard while tied or bump their heads, for example in a trailer, can injure the poll, so this area deserves gentle handling.
Care tip
When putting on a halter or bridle, fold the ears forward gently one at a time instead of forcing the strap over them. A horse that lowers its head for you is usually more relaxed, so reward it when it does.
Common mistake
Some people think a horse should always carry its head low with the poll bent. A soft poll comes from relaxation and training over time, not from pulling the head down with the reins.
