Chest
The front of the body between the front legs. Holds important muscles for movement.
A closer look
The chest is the front of the horse's body, between and just above the front legs, and it is covered by the large pectoral muscles. These muscles help move the front legs and support the body between them. How wide and deep the chest is depends on the horse's breed and build.
Why it matters
The chest muscles work hard every time the horse moves, pulls, or jumps. A breastplate or breast collar can sit across the chest to keep the saddle from sliding back, so this area should be checked for rubs.
Care tip
When a breastplate is used, you should be able to fit a hand between it and the chest so it doesn't limit breathing or movement. After trail rides, check the chest for scrapes, since it meets branches and brush first.
Common mistake
Standing directly in front of a horse can feel natural, but it's in a blind spot, and a startled horse may jump forward. Stand to the side near the shoulder instead.
