The best horse games for kids in 2026 are Horse Academy's free learning games, Star Stable Online, HORSE CLUB Ride West, Rival Stars Horse Racing and Howrse. It's also been a big month for horse games: Star Stable Online's 15th birthday party in Jorvik wrapped up with the September 23 update, Rival Stars Horse Racing added new braids and coat colors on September 8, and Schleich fans are counting down to HORSE CLUB Ride West on October 9.

Even Howrse, the horse-breeding game that many of today's parents played when they were younger, is still going. One artist posted on X this week that they had started playing it again after about 10 years away.

Star Stable Online 2026: what happened at the 15th birthday

Star Stable Online is an online riding adventure on the island of Jorvik, where you ride, race, finish quests and meet other players. In 2026 the game turned 15, and the party lasted four weeks. The last birthday activities ran through Wednesday, September 23, and that day's update started a calmer week.

During the party, players raced, dressed up for the Style Riders Show, earned points on the Trail of StarFam and teamed up in riding clubs. One fan's party video showed a bus race and singing sheep.

A new breed, the Westphalian, arrived on September 9. Real Westphalians are German sport horses you often see in dressage and show jumping.

The same update brought back Star Stable's real-rules show jumping, which the game tried for a short time years ago, and this time it's here to stay. Knocking down a jump adds four faults, going over the time limit adds more faults, and the rider with the fewest faults wins, with the fastest time breaking a tie. Any player can try a practice round with Stacy at the Moorland paddock, and Star Riders can keep competing at the Silverglade Equestrian Center and Starshine Ranch. That's a great real-horse lesson: in show jumping, a clean round matters more than pure speed.

What's next in Jorvik

• Sept 23 to 30: the Bazaar is back with Friesian, Arabian, Pintabian and Curly horses.
• Sept 30: a new Westphalian story and a new Westphalian coat for Star Riders.
• Oct 7: Halloween events begin at Galloper's Keep.

For parents: new players can explore a free trial area. The rest of the map, thousands of member-only quests and many horses need a paid Star Rider membership, sold as a subscription or a one-time "Pay Once" option. The chat is text only, filtered by an AI moderation system, and reported messages are checked by human moderators.

HORSE CLUB Ride West: coming October 9

HORSE CLUB Ride West is the next game based on Schleich's HORSE CLUB toys, made by Wild River Games, the studio behind the HORSE CLUB Adventures games. It launches October 9, 2026, on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Steam. The US Nintendo eShop lists it at $39.99, rated E for Everyone, for one player, and it also runs on Switch 2.

You travel with Hannah, Sofia, Sarah and Lisa to the Wild River Ranch in the Wild West. According to the store pages, you can:

• Ride six horses, each with its own personality and traits
• Try Western events like barrel racing and pole bending
• Do archery, painting and even play the guitar
• Style your rider and horse, then go for the crown at a big Western riding tournament

Rival Stars Horse Racing: still galloping in 2026

Rival Stars Horse Racing is a realistic racing and breeding game from the studio PikPok. You train horses, ride races and breed foals to try for faster, better horses. It's free on phones and tablets with in-app purchases, and there is a $29.99 Desktop Edition on Steam plus versions for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and VR.

The September 8 update, called Season of Style, added:

• New braids: the Diamond Braid mane and the Continental Braid tail
• New coat genes: the Leaf Tobiano pattern, Black Sooty color and Pearl dilution
• Autumn events and a Golden Harvest daily-reward calendar (Sept 17 to 30)

Coming next is the Heirs of the Herd community event, from September 28 to October 9. Every Grade 2 or higher foal that players breed counts toward shared goals that unlock free rewards for everyone.

Howrse: a classic horse game that's still running

Howrse is a horse-breeding game you can play in a web browser or on a phone. You choose from more than 50 breeds, from Arabians to Shetland ponies (plus unicorns), feed and care for your horses, train them once they turn 3 and run your own equestrian center on the web version.

Its makers say more than 60 million players have tried Howrse. On June 10, 2026, a big mobile update added a landscape view and a new look that matches the browser version, so it's easier to play on phones and tablets.

For parents: Howrse is free with optional purchases of Passes, the game's premium currency. For players under 16, sign-up uses a parent's email address.

What horse games teach (and what they can't)

Good horse games can teach real skills. The best ones help you think like a horse keeper:

• Daily routines: Stable Pal and Howrse remind you that horses need food, water and care every single day.
• Grooming: matching brushes to jobs is real barn knowledge. Learn the order in our grooming guide.
• Breeds and colors: Star Stable and Rival Stars show real breeds and coat colors. Meet them on our breeds page.
• Competition rules: show jumping and barrel racing are real sports with real rules, like faults and time limits.

But games leave some big things out. Real horses:

• Eat mostly hay and grass, a little at a time for many hours a day (nutrition basics)
• Need regular hoof trims from a farrier and checkups from a vet
• Can get scared and may kick if surprised, so safety always comes first (safety rules)
• Get tired, need rest days and can't be called to you from across the map

Parent checklist: before you hit download

• Check the age rating (ESRB or App Store) and play the first 15 minutes together.
• Turn on purchase approval, or switch off in-app purchases in your device settings.
• Look at the chat settings in online games, and remind kids never to share their real name, school or address.
• Set a time limit, and balance screen time with real horse time when you can.
