Local press published new cabalgata and traffic details on Oct 8, two weeks before the fair opens.

ExpoGan Chihuahua 2026: dates and the opening cabalgata

ExpoGan Chihuahua 2026 runs from Oct 22 to Nov 1, and it kicks off with a traditional cabalgata on Thursday, Oct 22 at 4:00 p.m. Local reports say the ride ends at the rodeo arena of the Unión Ganadera Regional de Chihuahua (UGRCH), host of this 43rd edition of the Chihuahua livestock fair.

The fair's slogan this year is "El Norte se hizo a caballo" (the North was made on horseback). That is a fair summary of why the opening ride matters more than a typical parade.

One detail to confirm: where it starts

Two sets of reporting disagree. An Oct 8 report from Chihuahua says the ride leaves from Palacio de Gobierno in the historic center and heads toward the UGRCH arena. Earlier fair materials, from September, say it leaves from Parque El Palomar.

We could not verify which is current, so we are not giving a route or street closures here. Check the fair's and organizers' official social media, and the city's traffic notices, in the days before Oct 22.

What a cabalgata is in Chihuahua's ranching culture

A cabalgata is a group ride on horseback, usually through town or across the countryside. In Mexico it can be a parade, a pilgrimage, a political commemoration or a fair opener. For a broader explanation, see What Is a Cabalgata?.

In Chihuahua the horse is not a costume. Cattle ranching shaped the state, and the working horse (the one that gathers cattle on big open range) is part of family identity. So when ranchers, riders and families come into the city on horseback, the fair opens with the same animal that built the industry it celebrates.

Expect riders in boots, hats and ranch gear on a range of horses; we have no published list of who will ride. Different Mexican fairs stage their rides differently: compare Expo Ganadera Jalisco or the Alvarado, Veracruz cabalgata.

The Unión Ganadera Regional and its rodeo arena

The Unión Ganadera Regional de Chihuahua is the cattle producers' organization that hosts ExpoGan. Its grounds hold the fair, the livestock judging and the rodeo arena where the cabalgata is reported to finish.

Organizers' materials list cattle breed judging (Brangus, Angus, Charolais, Beefmaster, Salers and Hereford), plus horses, sheep and pigs. Horse-related items include "caballos bailadores" (dancing horses). There are also livestock auctions and a fat-steer contest.

The arena is also where Mexican ranch sport lives. If you are new to it, read What Is Jaripeo? before you go, and ask staff what is scheduled on the day you visit, since we found no confirmed list of rodeo events.

How to attend

  • Dates: Oct 22 to Nov 1, 2026.
  • Cabalgata: Thursday, Oct 22, 4:00 p.m.; the public is invited to watch.
  • Fair admission: adults 100 pesos, children 50 pesos (reports give the age cutoff as 12). Mondays are free and Tuesdays are 2x1, per local reports.
  • Bus: a special Bowí route runs daily 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. from Estación Justicia on Avenida Ocampo to the main UGRCH entrance (12 pesos round trip with a Bowí card).
  • After the parade: the band Los Vendavales is billed for the Explanada. Music is a side dish here; the horses are the main course.

Riders who want to take part should not just show up. The organizers say they will announce the sign-up process on social media, and no details were public when we checked.

Horse welfare and spectator etiquette

A parade horse is working in a crowd, with noise, engines, music and flags. Even calm horses can spook, so a few habits protect people and animals.

For spectators and families

  • Stand back from the route and never step in front of a horse.
  • Do not feed, pet or take selfies up close without the rider's permission.
  • Keep children by the hand, not running along the curb.
  • Leave dogs at home, turn off camera flashes and keep drones on the ground.
  • Do not wave hats, balloons or plastic bags near horses' faces. See horse safety for kids.

For riders

  • Fit and condition your horse for a slow hours-long ride on pavement. Check the shoes (herraje) and tack beforehand.
  • Bring water, and offer it before and after. Autumn afternoons can still be warm.
  • Ride with space between horses, and keep stallions and kicking horses clear of the crowd.
  • Plan the trailer trip: see how to haul a horse long distance.
  • Wear a helmet if you can, and know your horse's limits. See riding safety.

What to watch next

  1. The organizers' official announcement of the start point, route and rider registration.
  2. City traffic notices ahead of Oct 22.
  3. The fair's program of livestock judging and horse exhibitions.

If you cannot attend, the cabalgata is the one piece of ExpoGan that shows what the Chihuahuan horse culture is about. Come early, stand back and let the horses pass.
