Start time: 12:00 noon
XEU (Sept 30) and Crónica Veracruz (Oct 7 press conference) agree that riders set off at 12:00 noon from the Infonavit sports field. XEU's Oct 1 route story tells riders to follow the Jinetes del Estado de Veracruz (OJEV A.C.) Facebook page for updates on departure times or official notices.
Our advice: check that page the week of the ride in case anything changes, and arrive early. With 2,000 horses, tacking up and lining up at the meeting point takes a while.
A ride tied to the Virgen del Rosario
The ride falls during Alvarado's Fiestas de Octubre, running Oct 2 to 18 this year in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, the town's patron saint. The municipal program also includes a mojiganga of giant figures, a donkey parade, a civic-military parade on Oct 15 and a closing night with dancing and fireworks on Oct 18.
Note that the municipal program already listed other cabalgatas earlier in the month, including the official DIF ride on Oct 4 and "Por amor a Alvarado." The Oct 17 Encuentro Estatal is a separate event called by a civil association.
Turnout tends to be huge. In October 2025, Alvarado's Virgen del Rosario cabalgata drew more than 5,000 riders, according to the local paper Notiver, and ended without incidents. New to the idea? Start with what a cabalgata is.
How to prepare a horse for a long group ride in the heat
Six kilometers sounds easy, but it means three hours of crowds, music, pavement and coastal humidity. What wears a horse down isn't the distance. It's heat, humidity and standing around in the sun.
Humidity matters most. Horses cool off when sweat evaporates, and in very humid air it barely does. University of Minnesota Extension advises against asking for work when air temperature (°F) plus relative humidity tops 150. For example, 86 °F (30 °C) with 70% humidity adds up to 156.
Water and shade
- Hydrate the day before. A horse at rest in mild weather drinks about 6 to 10 gallons a day; heat and work push that much higher.
- Bring your own bucket and offer water at every stop, even if the horse doesn't seem thirsty.
- Find shade at the meeting point and at stops. Don't leave a horse tied in full sun while you wait.
- Loose salt in the feed in the days before encourages drinking. Ask your vet before adding electrolytes, and always offer plain water too.
- Afterward, untack, hose with cool water, scrape off the excess and hand-walk in the shade.
Shoes and hooves
- Book the farrier one to two weeks ahead. Fresh shoes the day before can leave a horse footsore right when it matters.
- Loose shoes or raised nails are a hazard on pavement. Have everything checked.
- Asphalt is slippery, especially with smooth steel shoes. Walk the streets; no trotting or loping through crowds.
- Pick out hooves before and after, checking for stones and cuts.

Heat warning signs
Stop, find shade and hose the horse if you see:
- Very fast breathing that doesn't settle with rest.
- Heavy sweating or, worse, sweating that stops with hot, dry skin.
- Droopy ears, dullness, reluctance to move or stumbling.
- A skin pinch on the neck that takes several seconds to flatten (dehydration).
If the horse staggers, goes down or doesn't recover within about 20 minutes, call a vet right away. Heatstroke is an emergency.
A calm horse among 2,000
Brass bands, firecrackers, dogs, kids and hundreds of strange horses make this one of the most stressful days of the year for many animals. Preparation starts weeks ahead.
- Get out in company and on noisy streets before the event. A horse that has never left its pasture shouldn't debut at a mega ride.
- Do groundwork so the horse yields to pressure and stops when asked. See our groundwork basics and how to desensitize a horse.
- Check your tack: a saddle that fits, a girth that doesn't rub, sound bridle and reins, and a halter and lead in case you need to lead on foot.
- Know the limits. A mare in season, a green young horse or a buddy-sour horse can get difficult in a group. If in doubt, watch from the sidewalk.
Spacing and manners in the column
- Keep at least one horse length to the horse ahead, more at a trot or behind a kicker.
- A red ribbon in the tail is a common "this horse kicks" signal on group rides. Give it room, and use one if your horse kicks.
- Don't pass suddenly or squeeze between horses.
- If your horse gets upset, move out of the column to a safe side, dismount if needed and let it settle.
Kids at the cabalgata
Cabalgatas are family events, and kids on horseback are a common sight. The golden rule: every child has a responsible adult right beside them, either leading on foot or riding alongside.
- Helmets for kids (and adults). A cowboy hat won't protect a head in a fall.
- The quietest horse goes to the child, not the flashiest.
- Shade, water and sunscreen for children too. Three hours in the sun wears them out.
- One stretch at a time: if a child gets tired or scared, they get off. That's fine.
See our safety and kids sections for more.
Before you go: quick checklist
- Check the OJEV A.C. Facebook page for any change to the 12:00 noon start.
- Shoes checked days in advance.
- Bucket, water for you and the horse, sweat scraper and sponge.
- Basic first aid for horse and rider; see our first aid kit checklist.
- Charged phone and your vet's number.
- Comfortable western clothes and a helmet for riding.
- No alcohol while riding. An impaired rider endangers the horse, other riders and spectators.
Organizers estimate each rider spends about 1,500 pesos on the trip, food and local purchases. Trailer during the coolest hours with good ventilation.
What to watch next
In the week before, watch the OJEV A.C. page for any schedule or route changes. Alvarado's Fiestas de Octubre close on Oct 18 with dancing and fireworks, so you can make a weekend of it.
