Horse glossary
Hydration
Having enough water in the body.
In Spanish: Hidratación
What it means
Hydration means a horse has enough water in its body to digest food, cool down by sweating, and keep its muscles and joints working well. Horses lose a lot of water when they sweat, so they need more on hot days and after exercise.
Why it matters
A horse that doesn't drink enough can become dehydrated, which raises the risk of colic and heat stress. Because horses eat a lot of dry hay, drinking plenty of water also helps keep food moving through the gut.
Example
Hydration matters after exercise.
Try this
Make sure clean water is always available and notice how much of it is gone each day. Dry gums, a dull eye, or a horse that seems tired and flat are good reasons to tell an adult right away.
Common mistake
People often think horses drink less in winter, so they check water less. In fact, many horses need just as much water in cold months because they eat more dry hay.
