Why it's trending
Griffin Johnson announced Sandman's retirement on Oct. 7, 2026, and posts from BloodHorse and the Kentucky Derby drew a wave of fans who first met racing through the colt.
TL;DR
- Sandman, the gray Tapit colt who won the 2025 Arkansas Derby (G1) for trainer Mark Casse, was retired on Oct. 7, 2026.
- He retires with 3 wins, 1 second and 3 thirds from 15 starts and $1,547,831 in earnings, per BloodHorse.

Sandman racehorse: what just happened
The Sandman racehorse, a gray son of Tapit who won the 2025 Arkansas Derby (G1), has been retired from racing and will become a stallion. He stands his first season in 2027 at Rockridge Stud near Hudson, N.Y., for a $10,000 fee, "stands and nurses."
The news came on Oct. 7, 2026, from minority owner Griffin Johnson, the lifestyle influencer who turned the colt into one of racing's most-followed horses. BloodHorse, Horse Racing Nation and the Kentucky Derby's own X account quickly shared it.
The stud deal itself wasn't a surprise. Rockridge announced it on Sept. 17, and at the time a co-owner said the plan was one more start, possibly in October. Sandman made that start in an allowance race at Belmont Park on the Sunday before the announcement, finished sixth, and was then retired.
Sandman's racing career at a glance
Sandman was bred by Lothenbach Stables and is out of the Distorted Humor mare Distorted Music. He sold for $1.2 million at the 2024 Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-year-olds in training sale. He raced for D. J. Stable, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Stables, with Hall of Famer Mark Casse as his trainer.
The highlights
| Year | Race | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Maiden race, Saratoga | Won in his 2nd start |
| 2024 | Street Sense (G3), Churchill Downs | 3rd behind Sovereignty |
| 2025 | Southwest (G3), Oaklawn | 2nd |
| 2025 | Rebel (G2), Oaklawn | 3rd |
| 2025 | Arkansas Derby (G1), Oaklawn | Won by 2 1/2 lengths |
| 2025 | Kentucky Derby (G1) | 7th |
| 2025 | Preakness (G1) | 3rd |
He also won an allowance race at Oaklawn as a 2-year-old. After the Preakness he never finished better than fifth.
His final numbers
BloodHorse and Equibase list him at 3 wins, 1 second and 3 thirds from 15 starts, with $1,547,831 in earnings. You'll also see 14 starts and $1,544,531 in some stories. Those figures come from the September stud announcement, before his last race.
Why does one Arkansas Derby matter so much? It's a Grade 1, the top level of American racing, and a Grade 1 win is the line breeders look for first. Our guide to what a Grade 1 race is explains the system.
Griffin Johnson and Sandman: how an influencer brought new fans
Johnson had no racing background when America's Best Racing (ABR) paired him with Sandman through its "A Stake in Stardom" program. The idea is simple: give well-known personalities a small share of a real racehorse through a partnership, here West Point Thoroughbreds, and let them bring their audiences along.
It worked. ABR counted 51 posts by Johnson about Sandman and the Derby between March 20 and May 5, 2025. Those posts drew more than 212 million impressions, 3.3 million engagements and 35 million views, not counting Instagram and Snapchat stories.
A few things that followed:
- New fans at the track. Churchill Downs credited influencers, Johnson included, as part of why the 2025 Kentucky Derby drew its biggest TV audience since 1989.
- Industry recognition. The Turf Publicists of America gave Johnson its 2025 Big Sport of Turfdom award, which honors people who help racing get more media coverage.
- More horses, more causes. He has owned other West Point runners and is a board member and social media promoter for HISA's Equine Recovery Foundation, a nonprofit that helps racehorses with career-ending injuries.
- Fun moments. Metallica, the band behind "Enter Sandman," was a fan and sent T-shirts to Casse's barn crew before the 2025 Derby.
In his retirement post, Johnson called Sandman his first horse. He says he'll visit Rockridge often and follow the foals to the track, so his followers get to see the breeding side of racing too.
What retiring to stud actually involves
Most retired racehorses move on to new jobs as riding horses. You can read about that path in our guide to OTTBs. A Grade 1-winning colt with a strong pedigree is the exception: his value now lies in his foals.
The road from racetrack to breeding shed
- Let-down. He leaves race training and gets time to relax, usually with turnout, a change in feed and a break from daily gallops.
- Move to the farm. He ships to Rockridge, settles into a stallion barn and paddock routine, and meets a new team of handlers.
- Fertility checks. Before taking paying bookings, a stallion's semen quality and fertility are checked by a vet.
- Marketing. Farms hold stallion shows and publish pedigree reports so breeders can see him and plan matings.
- First book of mares. The Northern Hemisphere breeding season runs roughly February to June. Registered Thoroughbreds must be conceived by live cover, with no artificial insemination.
The timeline fans should know
- 2027: first breeding season.
- 2028: first foals are born, about 11 months after each mating.
- 2029: those foals are yearlings, the age when many are sold at auction.
- 2030: the first crop can race as 2-year-olds.
So Johnson's "follow the foals to the track" plan is a multi-year story.
Sandman's stud fee and why New York
Sandman's first-season fee is $10,000. "Stands and nurses" means the breeder pays only when a live foal stands up and nurses. We break down how that works, plus other fee terms, in how stud fees work.
New York's breeding program is the bigger reason he's going to Hudson. A New York-bred is a Thoroughbred foaled in the state and registered with the state's breeding fund, which also sets residency rules for mares. Foals sired by a registered New York stallion earn the highest awards.
| Award (per NYBreds) | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breeder, New York-sired | 40% (cap $40,000) | 20% | 10% |
| Breeder, not New York-sired | 20% (cap $20,000) | 10% | 5% |
| Stallion owner | 10% (cap $10,000) | 10% | 10% |
Those percentages are paid on the purse money a New York-bred earns for a top-three finish in races run in New York State; a top-three finish at a track in another state doesn't earn them. Stallion owner awards go only to owners of stallions registered in New York when the foal was conceived. In plain terms, a New York breeder who uses Sandman can earn twice the award rate of one who sends a mare out of state. That's why a Grade 1 winner by Tapit is a big draw for a regional program.
Rockridge also built mare support into the deal. Sandman stands for a sold-out syndicate that includes CJ Stable, St. Elias Stable, Wachtel Stable, Gary Barber and Pantofel Stable. Rockridge says building mare support into the ownership is the best way to market a stallion in New York, and St. Elias Stable plans to send him mares.
What to watch next
- Rockridge's 2027 fee list and stallion show. Stallion farms often hold shows in the off-season. Check Rockridge's announcements for any chance to see him in person.
- Johnson's updates. Expect content from the farm as Sandman settles in and, later, of his first foals.
- His first foals in 2028. Watch how many mares he covers in 2027. A full first book is a sign breeders believe in him.
- The next "Stake in Stardom" horse. If ABR keeps the program going, another influencer-owned horse may become racing's next social media favorite.
